Please Welcome! Parker Robert!!!!!

Parker has decided to make his grand entrance into this world in the same fashion as his brother...6 weeks early and teeny tiny.  Parker was born on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 5:15 pm weighing in at 4 pounds 3.5 ounces and measuring 17 inches long!

Here's Parker's story:

As some of you may know, we had quite a long and trying pregnancy with Hayden 4 years ago.  I had a lot of trouble staying pregnant and he arrived 6 weeks early at 4 pounds 12 ounces.  He had a 2 week long stay in the NICU but recovered quickly and joined our family.  Parker's story was supposed to be a little different.  We were supposed to take home a big, chunky baby at full term but it just wasn't in the plans for us.  I had been getting progesterone shots every week with our wonderful doctor, Dr. Hutchison and had extra visits and ultrasounds to make sure I made it to full term.  I had a couple of hiccups along the way this time, like a gallbadder attack and a couple of visits to labor and delivery for terbutaline shots but it appeared to us at 34 weeks that we were really going to make it this time....until Wednesday night when something just wasn't right.      I went to bed feeling fine at around 9:00 and woke up an hour later with a very strong pain in my chest and upper rib cage.  I assumed this was another gallbladder pain so I tried to drink some water and relax to see if it would go away.  The pain intensified over the next hour and Matt and I decided it was time to get it checked out.  We arrived at St. Joe's hospital and went straight to labor and delivery to see what they could find out.  I waited around for some test results and they determined it definitely wasn't my gallbladder.  I was in labor once again.  I was given a shot of terbutaline, which did not take affect at all.  The nurse checked me and I was already 3 centimeters dilated, which is significant but still in the range of being able to stop labor.  The doctor on call, Dr. Priestly decided to put me on a powerful drug called Magnesium Sulfate to attempt to stop my contractions.  I went over to a labor room and spent the whole night still having the contractions and just feeling generally yucky.  By Thursday morning, the nurse decided to give me extra medicine and put me on the highest dose of magnesium sulfate that anyone my size can tolerate.  I felt terrible the whole time....shaky, like I was going to vomit, hot then cold, etc. but at around 8:30 in the morning, suddenly I couldn't see straight, my vision was blurry and I couldn't breathe.  My amazing nurse Genevieve knew there was something wrong with me so she immediately yelled for Dr. Mainman, the doctor on call that morning and he immediately unplugged the magnesium pump and they checked my blood pressure.  It was at a VERY scary 55/26 and I remember my eyes begining to roll in the back of my head.  The doctor got a shot of epinephrine, which is a stimulant to the heart and gave it to me in my leg.  I don't remember the next few minutes but suddenly I began to feel better and could breathe again.  Dr. Mainman checked me again and now I was 4cm dilated and there was nothing left they could do to stop labor.  He immediately broke my water and called the anesthesiologist to give me an epidural.  Once that was in place and I was out of pain and more stable, they started me on pitocin to get things moving along since I had been in labor for so long.  I was worried about Parker's health and so frustrated that again we were being cheated out of having a healthy labor and delivery and a healthy baby.  We were under the impression that Parker was about 5 1/2 pounds based on the ultrasound I had on Monday the 21st.  Once the doctor could see the head, he asked for the NICU team to be brought to my room for delivery because it was clear that Parker was MUCH smaller than anticipated. The rest of my labor went fairly easy, with about 4 hours of slow progress until around 5:00 when I could definitely feel that it was time for him to come.  The doctor came back in and with 2 quick pushes, our Precious Parker was here!  I remember my first look at him...he was SO tiny...I was terrified at the sight of his tiny purple feet and his little sweet face.  I knew he would need some extra help breathing and he definitely did right away.  He was weighed and when the nurse announced 4 pounds 3.5 ounces, I broke into tears knowing that our little man was in need of lots of help.  The nurses brought him over to me for one very quick kiss, then he was whisked away to the NICU before I could even get to meet him.  The next hour was very surreal.  The room was dead silent, everyone packed up the labor supplies and just as quick as it began, it was over.  We were left in this big room without our baby and with only the promise that in a couple of hours we would be able to see him.  I was moved to a room upstairs which only made me feel more empty and upset because the room had a little bed for a newborn in it and all I could hear was crying babies all around.  When Dr. Mehrabani, the Neonatologist came to see us, he said that Parker was going to be alright but he needs a few weeks to grow and get stronger.  He was placed on a breathing machine called Nasal CPAP to help open his lungs and was being given IV fluids.  We were told he could take up to 6 days to begin breathing on his own.  My thoughts immediately turned to Hayden.  What would the next few weeks be like for him?  He didn't ask for Mommy to have another baby and for that baby to be sick and need all of her attention.  I felt endless amounts of guilt and frustration at that moment and I could do nothing but cry, cry for my sick little 4 pound baby and cry for my precious 4 year-old son who until Thursday at 5:15 was the very center of my universe.  I decided to go straight away to see Parker and just let him know we were there for him.  He was so tiny, so fragile but just absolutely gorgeous.  He looks exactly like Hayden in every way and I immediately felt such a strong sense of love and accomplishment.  Look at this precious baby we had created and look at his wonderful big brother who was going to watch over him and protect him.  Hayden was unable to see Parker due to RSV season so explaining where his brother is was the biggest challenge.  We explained that Parker was tiny and needed a little extra attention, just like he did as a baby and he seemed to accept that as an answer.  Matt was my rock through all of those first 24 hours.  He assured me that Parker and Hayden will both be ok and they are here for a reason.  Overnight I didn't sleep much, just thought of Parker and went several times to the NICU to stare at him.  He held his own through the night and in the morning, the doctor took him off of the CPAP after just 12 hours on it.  He was placed on regular oxygen and I was allowed to hold him for 2 hours that night, which was just heaven.  His little body is so tiny and warm and I just could have sat there for hours and hours.  The next morning I arrived to visit Parker to discover that he was off of his oxygen and doing very well.  They also decided that Sunday he would get to start feedings.  Unfortunately I had to be sent home from the hospital Saturday afternoon and it was so hard to leave but I was glad to be with Hayden for a little while.  Sunday was a great day of me sitting at the hospital all day with Parker and he enjoyed his tube feedings and spent a lot of time just relaxing in his little bed.  He was also started on the phototherapy lights for jaundice and they seem to be working nicely but he will need them for a little while.  I will try to post every couple of days with an update but for now I thank everyone for their well-wishes and support and prayers for our baby boy and our family! :) These photos are a couple of days old which is why you see the oxygen and such on him.  I will post some more as I have time!

We are back for good now!

Hello there! I am so happy to officially be back to blogging again!  We have so many new things going on, I don't even know where to begin.  I suppose I will go person-by-person with an update.

Me: Well, obviously the biggest update is that we are currently 34 weeks pregnant with our beautiful son Parker Robert, who is growing wonderfully.  He was 5 pounds 6 ounces at our ultrasound yesterday so it appears we have completely avoided having a NICU baby this time around.  It's been a very long pregnancy filled with weekly progesterone injections and one hospitalization with a failed gallbladder.  Parker is absolutely beautiful in every picture we see of him and he looks JUST like Hayden and Matt.  I love him very much already and hope we get to meet him in the next few weeks!

I am now officially a stay-at-home Mommy which is just wonderful.  I love my job very much and will miss the kids dearly, but with 2 sons, my time is much better spent at home with them.  I may eventually go back, but for now I want to stay with my babies and enjoy them!

Matt: Matt is doing awesome as usual and he's also very excited about the new addition to our family.  He's still working at TriSports and now he's a Buyer, which he loves.  He also was awarded Employee of the Year this year, which is a huge honor that he very much deserved!  Sid and Di are coming to visit in 2 weeks, so we are under full preparations for their visit.  We are all super excited for that!

Hayden: Oh, sweet Hayden is just as sweet and amazing as ever.  He turned 4 last month and is just an absolute delight.  He is extremely intelligent as always, doing kindergarten level math and spelling lots of words.  I am endlessly proud of my son.  He can't wait to be a big brother as well.  He's helped us with all of our preparations for Parker's arrival and even helped choose his name.  I could go on for hours about Hayden but since this blog is about him, I'll let the new posts speak for themselves!

Jane: Jane is the most wonderful MeeMaw ever, which is also nothing new.  She is still working at the Shoe House but manages a new store and is doing very well.  She loves her grandsons and everything about them!

Buster: Well, we have had a lot of drama around Buster the past few weeks.  He got very ill 3 weeks ago and found himself in the animal hospital in an emergency situation.  Apparently he is a diabetic and his body could no longer regulate it on his own.  He was very sick for 3 days, but they were able to regulate him and get him evened out a bit on insulin injections and a special diet.  We now give him his insulin twice a day and feed him a very strict diet of special wet food.  We were so glad they were able to save our sweet boy's life.  We love him so much and he's no burden to care for at all!

That is a general update from us for now, but I will post a new post on top of this one with pictures of our hospital tour and our newest ultrasound pictures of Parker from yesterday!

Back Again (with news!)

Hello there! We are back and hopefully able to consistently post again on this laptop we are using while we figure out our computer.  I am really missing being able to update everyone on a regular basis and I can't wait to get back to sharing with you.

We have BIG news in the Duffin family this week...we are finally able to share that we are expecting a brother or sister for Hayden on April 7th!  We are almost 10 weeks along now and already got to see this beautiful baby on an ultrasound last week.  It has a great heart beat and was moving all over the place!  Hayden is beyond thrilled to be a Big Brother and he really wants a brother, which would be just fine with us.  He's already picking things out in stores to add to our baby registry and he even has name suggestions...some of which are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Baby.  I am looking forward to making it as fun as possible as for him and having him involved every step of the way.

I will be VERY closely followed by my wonderful new Doctor for the whole pregnancy to prevent preterm labor.  We will be getting an ultrasound every 4 weeks and I will be on weekly progesterone shots to keep my uterus relaxed from 15-37 weeks.  In short, me and my Doctor are going to be best friends by the end of this.  She is such a sweet and wonderful lady and I can't wait to have a healthy pregnancy this time.

Matt is loving his new position at work and he is so happy with his new duties. I have never seen him smile so much after work in my life, so I am very happy for him.

Hayden is loving school so far this year.  He has already learned a lot and he's made a ton of new friends. He enjoys being a veteran from last year and being Mr. Bossy as he is, he loves to help the newer kids with the rules.  I love being his teacher and watching his interaction with other children.  He's also getting too smart for us now.  He remembers EVERYTHING and I also taught him last week how to read some words by sounding out the letters.  Smarty pants!

I am going to take some photos today of Hayden playing with his friends at the 2 BBQ's we are attending and I will post them with the ultrasound photos today or tomorrow afternoon!

Love to all!

We're Back (sort of!)

Well, hello there! It has been way too long since I have been able to update you all! Our computer is still in bad shape and is currently being worked on by an awesome friend.  Another awesome friend lent us his laptop to use in the meantime but I unfortunately can't upload photos on it.  So, instead I'll just post some updates for right now until we can catch up on photos!

Our visit with Becky and Alan was an absolute blast and we really enjoyed having them here.  We are also currently missing them terribly right now.  Hayden fell in love with both of them and he had a great time learning how to use their iphones.  He actually figured out all on his own how to navigate the menus and get to the games.  They were so sweet and patient to allow him to play with their phones, even when he sneezed ALL OVER Becky's phone.  It was so funny to see her face!  We did lots of fun things with them such as Apple Annie's for apple and peach picking, The Pima Air and Space museum, Mt. Lemmon, etc.  We also ate all kinds of fun things and shopped until we dropped.  We love having visitors and can't wait for Sid and Di to come to us!

On Matt's front, he started his new position as a buyer at work and he is extremely happy with it.  He loves the interaction and he can't wait to see all of the great things this position brings him.  We are all very proud of him!

I've gone back to work as of last week and I'm really enjoying the new school we are at.  It's a very nice classroom and the school has a great feel about it.  I also have an awesome group of kiddos so it's going to be a super fun year!

Jane is still enjoying her new store and is plugging along just the same!  She misses Becky and Alan a lot, but Hayden always makes that better!

Speaking of Mr. Hayden, he's up to all kinds of awesome things!  He just gets smarter ans smarter as the weeks go by and he's such a joy!  He is loving the new school year because he is no longer the youngest.  Since he was with us last year and we have so many new kids, he's loving being able to tell the new children the rules and show them how things work.  It's so cute to watch him say "here I'll help you" or "look, you put your stuff over here".  He's speaking more spanish and sign language than ever so I am liking learning new signs along with him since he knows most of what I know already.  Hayden also got a little taller again and he's actually taller than one kid in the class this year! He's about 37 1/2 inches tall now so I'm so happy for him to not be the littlest anymore.  He's also got Matt's imagination and makes up such fun games.  I am so proud of my little guy and I can't believe he's almost 4 months away from being a 4 year-old!

Let's see, I suppose that's about all for now so I can make dinner really quick, but we love everyone and I will do my best to start posting every couple of days again!

We're still here!

Hey everyone,
I REALLY apologize for not catching up and posting everything from Becky and Alan's trip.  I have at least 50 pictures I want to post.  Unfortunately our computer is in a VERY fragile state right now.  It crashed several days ago and Matt spent hours fixing it.  We luckily saved all of our THOUSANDS of precious photos and all of our music.  We are currently waiting for out new external hard drive to arrive this week before we upload anything else or do anything to fix the computer further.  I will have so much to report, including our first day back to school tomorrow and I promise to catch up!  Hayden is wonderful as always and brilliant as ever and we can't wait to post everything.  So, much love to all and we hope to be on the mend by the end of this week and up and running again!

Having A Blast

i apologize for the lack of posts this week so far.  We are having an absolute blast with Alan and Becky and so far we have already done Tombstone, Apple Annie's and a ton of shopping and eating.  Tonight, Matt and I are taking them out to Desert Diamond Casino to play around a bit and the next week we have a ton of plans including Mt. Lemmon, Sea Life Aquarium, bowling, more shopping, a few movies and lots more cool places to eat.  Tomorrow is very special because they get to watch Hayden play T-Ball.  I am going to wait on the photo posts until after they leave, but trust me, I'm taking loads of cute photos and trying to remember cute details.  Much love to everyone!

Flashlights

It must be a "boy thing" but Hayden is really into playing with flashlights.  He has his own Buzz Lightyear flashlight and MeeMaw recently brought home 3 others from one of the shoe reps at work.  So far we have played flashlight tag, shadow puppets, flashlight faces, and done hours of "exploring" in the dark.  Not too long ago, he was afraid to go into a dark room, so I am glad he's getting over that and is actually willing to play in the dark now.  I'm not a huge fan of being in the dark so I hope he doesn't end up with my fear if he doesn't have to.  Buster looks at us all like we're crazy and usually follows Hayden around in the dark, probably to make sure he's ok.  It's cute actually, he doesn't want his baby to get lost in the dark   :)

Here's some pics of the fun last night before bed.  Of course they are blurry but you get the idea!
